Single-Point Diamond Turning
With the recent installation of a Nanoform 350 Single Point Diamond
Turning Machine, Nu-Tek has significantly enhanced its metal optics
capabilities. With this machine, Nu-Tek can diamond-turn metal, crystal,
and plastic substrates to 18-inch diameter. Now flat, spherical, and
particularly aspheric optics can be manufactured with unprecedented
economy and quality. Candidate substrates for diamond turning include
- Soft metals such as
- Aluminum, Brass, Copper, Nickel
- Crystalline materials such as
- Silicon, Amtir, Calcium Fluoride, Zinc Sulfide,
Zinc Selenide, Germanium, Barium Fluoride, KDP, Cesium Iodide, Potassium Bromide, Gallium Arsenide
- Certain plastics, including Acrylic
Not Just Diamond Turning Quite often the
optics are taken off this machine and require no further attention. In
fact, surface accuracy around one fringe and surface roughness of 20-60
Angstroms RMS are typical. Requests for an even higher quality than this
are not a problem. Nu-Tek has been polishing these substrates for nearly
25 years! Our post polishing techniques can further improve both the
surface accuracy and the surface roughness of these parts.
Bare Aluminum, Not just for IR anymore
Nu-Tek's techniques for polishing bare aluminum have been undergoing
steady improvement over the years. We can now leverage our proprietary
techniques to offer bare Aluminum optics polished to a finish better
than 10 Angstroms RMS. This high-quality finish can often obviate the
need for applying a Nickel coating and repolishing. We are now making
high-quality, thermally stable, all-Aluminum snap together systems for
UV and visible applications.
